Poaching of wildlife for illegal international markets was widespread in Nepal in 2002. In response, the Government initiated anti-poaching measures that involved local communities.
Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the world and with generally weak governance, has been able to implement a successful rhino conservation programme with the help of local communities.
The need to raise public awareness about the threatened status of the Chinese pangolin and the laws that exist to protect the animal in Nepal has put community-engagement at the heart of a conservation programme in the east of the country.
