Uncontrolled and unregulated trade in yellow anaconda skins led to declines in numbers of the species in Argentina. In 2001 a new regulatory and administrative framework was drawn up that focussed on an approach based on sustainable development.

Saving vicuñas from over-exploitation

Vicuna conservation in the Andes is an international success story of collaboration in conservation. Fifty years ago, over-exploitation coupled with a lack of management threatened the animal with extinction. The global population was down to 10,000 individuals.
